The comments on The Inquirer article show that this is a load of rubbish; lots of OS X browsers don't report the version number (old versions of Safari and Firefox, as well as current versions of Camino), and one guy even went as far to show that 10.5.6 with Safari on his Hackintosh does send the version in the headers...
