The Podcast downloader is also reasonably good, and allows you to delete podcasts using a swipe. This means that if you were going away for a weekend, you could get your podcasts without running out of space.

This is another welcomed update to the iPhone OS.

Recently, i was given the task of installing OSX Leopard on an old eMac. Unfortunately, this old eMac didn’t have a DVD drive.

While searching for a solution, i found a tidbit of information about sharing a DVD drive using Target Disk Mode. The plan would be to place a second Mac in target disk mode and then place a DVD in the drive of the second Mac. This would then be accessible to the first Mac. However, upon experimentation, i found that this didn’t work.

An idea did appear though, that you could install OSX to any Mac and have any other Mac boot from it. Therefore if you could install Mac OSX onto the drive of the eMac then you would be able to boot this later.

So i placed the eMac in target disk mode, and placed the DVD in the second Mac. Then booted the second Mac from the DVD, and told the installer to install to the FireWire drive (the eMac’s drive). This started to install, unsurprisingly slightly slower than normal. Once OSX was fully installed, the eMac booted fine.

One thing to bear in mind, if you’re going to try this, is to check the minimum requirements of OSX so that you don’t spend time installing the OS when it won’t run.

connect.c is a simple relaying command to make network connections via SOCKS and https proxies. It is mainly intended to be used as a proxy command for SSH.

You can download a copy and compile it using the command
gcc -o connect connect.c
, however you might find if you are using Mac OSX that it doesn’t compile properly, that’s because you need to make a couple of changes. You need to find the
#include <resolv.h>
line and change it to
#include <resolv8_compat.h>
and above it add
#define MAXDNAME 2048
.

Once it’s compiled successfully copy the resulting executable file ‘connect’ to /usr/local/bin (as root, or sudo). then, in your
~/.ssh/ssh_config
file add the following line:

ProxyCommand /usr/local/bin/connect -5 -S proxyserver:proxyport %h %p

Or
-4
if it’s a SOCKS4 server.

Why is this useful? If you were lucky enough to get hold of NetShare before it was pulled, you can use this to SSH through it directly, you might also want to experiment with the -C option for SSH which enables compression if you’re going to do something like this.

Newer laptop Mac’s by default use ‘Safe Sleep’. This means that when you put your Mac to sleep, it writes the contents of RAM out to the hibernation file before going to sleep. This means that if it completely runs out of power (or you remove the battery to swap it) you wont lose your work, because it will automatically have gone into hibernation.

However, this takes time, particularly if you have a large amount of RAM, and during this time the hard drive is still spinning - and writing data. If you want your Mac to go to sleep straight away and don’t care about losing the ’safe’-ness of your sleep mode, you can change your hibernation mode using this terminal command:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

Before doing this, you might want to check what your current hibernation mode is:

pmset -g | grep hibernatemode

By default it will either be 3 (Safe Sleep) or 7 (Safe Sleep if you have secure virtual memory enabled).

Now your Mac should go to sleep much quicker.

Here’s the answer, and it involves Automator.

Create a new Workflow in Automator, and then add the “Run Shell Script” action to your Workflow. Then add the following command into it.

/System/Library/CoreServices/”Menu Extras”/User.menu/Contents/Resources/CGSession -suspend

As so:

You can then save your Workflow as an Application.

Ensuring that you have Fast User Switching enabled, when this application is run it will drop your desktop onto the login window while keeping your processes running.
