How to install OSX without a DVD drive

Recently, i was given the task of installing OSX Leopard on an old eMac. Unfortunately, this old eMac didn’t have a DVD drive.

While searching for a solution, i found a tidbit of information about sharing a DVD drive using Target Disk Mode. The plan would be to place a second Mac in target disk mode and then place a DVD in the drive of the second Mac. This would then be accessible to the first Mac. However, upon experimentation, i found that this didn’t work.

.mdf and the Mac

I recently acquired a disk image that was using the file extension .mdf. This file extension is Alcohol 120%’s proprietary disk image format.

Since i don’t run Windows and therefore can’t use Alcohol 120%, i went in search of a solution.

The solution is simple. By renaming the .mdf file to a .cdr file, this allows the Disk Utility in OS X to mount the drive as normal. This also gives you access to all the data inside the disk image.

Locking Your Screen

In Mac OS X there are several ways to lock your screen automatically. However, what if you only want to lock your screen when you want?

Here’s the answer, and it involves Automator.

Losing the Tool Bar

Sometimes it’s just nicer to have nothing in your browser but the page. In Safari/WebKit, this can be completed using either the Menu Bar or using Command + Shift + \.

This hides the Tool Bar. However, you’re obviously going to still need to access the Address Bar and you may need to access the Search Bar. This can be done using the keyboard shortcuts Command + L and Command + Alt + F respectively.

These shortcuts make the Tool Bar appear but only until the page changes. Another nice feature.

The Back and Forward functions can be completed with Command followed by either the left arrow or the right arrow.

Overall, a nice touch which should help those of you with smaller screens to see more of the web page.
