Then you’re doing it wrong.
If you have 20000 songs, clicking the little arrow is much quicker.

Surely this is a solution to a non-issue; you can see what song is currently playing and you have a filter. Put the two together and voilà. With that said, I’ve always found the iTunes filter intolerably slow. I find iTunes pretty slow altogether.
